Secondary Breast Augmentation
TREATMENT OVERVIEW
A secondary breast augmentation also known as a breast implant replacement or revision is a procedure to remove or replace your existing implants and make adjustments to the size and shape of your breasts. Dr. Sof will also discuss with you the management of the implant capsule, whether it needs to be released, removed partially or removed completely as part of the procedure.

Dr Sof will discuss the procedure in full with you during you’re consultation and answer any questions you may have.

THINGS TO AVOID AFTER SECONDARY BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
The following five steps will support your recovery
- Avoid engaging in strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or intense physical labor for several weeks following secondary breast augmentation surgery. These activities can strain the surgical incisions and impede the healing process.
- Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with the body's healing process and increase the risk of complications after secondary breast augmentation surgery. It's best to avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake during the recovery period to promote optimal healing and minimise risks.
- It's essential to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with Dr. Sof after secondary breast augmentation surgery. These appointments allow Dr. Sof to monitor your progress, assess healing, and address any concerns or complications that may arise.
- Pay close attention to any signs of complications following secondary breast augmentation surgery, such as excessive swelling, redness, warmth, or drainage from the incision sites. If you experience any unusual symptoms or have concerns about your recovery, contact Dr. Sof immediately for further evaluation and treatment.
- Following Dr. Sof's post-operative care instructions is crucial for a successful recovery after secondary breast augmentation surgery. This includes taking prescribed medications, wearing compression garments or surgical bras as advised, and practicing proper wound care. Ignoring these instructions can increase the risk of complications and delay healing.

FAQS
Following your initial surgery you should have been advised, that your breast implants aren’t designed to last forever and eventually they would need to be replaced. Implants do not have a specific lifespan. It is important to remember that although you may not have experienced any issues, it is still highly recommended you have your implants checked by a plastic surgeon around 10 years after your initial surgery.
It is not necessary for you to return to your original surgeon for a replacement or revision. Your surgery can be performed by any qualified plastic surgeon, however, we recommended seeking out a surgeon who has specific experience in the areas of replacement or revision due to the increased complexity or the procedure.
Dr Sof is a specialist in secondary breast surgery and will discuss all options available to you during your initial consultation.
Although everyone’s different, here’s a rough guide to recovery after your surgery: Same day or next day – you’ll be able to leave hospital and should take one to two weeks off work | One to two weeks – stitches removed unless they’ve dissolved | One to two weeks – may be able to drive (check with your car insurance company) | One to two weeks – back to work, depending on your job | Six weeks – back to normal activities, including exercise | Six to 12 weeks – your breasts will start to look and feel more natural | Up to 12 weeks – wear a support bra for 24 hours a day | Up to one year – keep your breast scars out of direct sunlight
Primary breast augmentation surgery refers to the initial procedure to enhance breast size and shape using implants or fat grafting. Secondary breast augmentation, also known as revision surgery, is performed to address complications or achieve desired changes following a previous breast augmentation procedure. This may involve replacing implants, correcting asymmetry, or revising the results of the initial surgery.
The timing for secondary breast augmentation surgery depends on individual circumstances, such as the reason for revision and the extent of healing from the initial procedure. Dr. Sof will assess your specific situation during a consultation to determine the appropriate timing for revision surgery.
